Bacterial Vaginosis
Lesbians as well as heterosexual women suffer from some health problems related to genital sphere (inflammatory diseases, new growths, hormonal disbalance, etc), as well they suffer from sexually transmitted diseases, though much rarer than heterosexual women. Lesbians get STDs and other infections through types of sex activity characteristic to them, such as:
- vagina-to-vagina contacts
- oral-genital contacts
- contacts between fingers and the vagina, touching own genitals after touching the partner's intimate zones
- sharing of sex toys
- transmission of infections through bed-clothes when sleeping together especially when both partners are naked, as well this could be sharing of towels and lingerie with an infected partner.
In addition it should be mentioned that lesbians unlike heterosexual women do not quite care about their health getting into occasional sex contacts. They do not pay their attention to their partner's health, as well as to their own health.
One of the most spread female diseases is bacterial vaginosis. Vaginosis is disorder of normal balance between various groups of microorganisms the vagina contains. In other words this is a kind of disbacteriosis.
The vagina of a healthy woman contains a great deal of necessary bacteria which provide production of agents and ferments protecting the vagina and maintaining its normal acid-base balance. There are many types of these bacteria the main being lactic acid bacillus and other bacteria called anaerobia. Both lactic acid bacillus and anaerobia are components of normal vaginal microflora. Bacterial vaginosis implies disbalance between lactic acid bacillus and anaerobia - the amount of lactic acid bacillus gets smaller than usual, whereas the amount of anaerobia considerably increases.
Lesbians like heterosexual women often suffer from bacterial vaginosis, as well this disease can be found in virgins who do not have sex at all. What to lesbians, about 18-36 per cent of them suffer from bacterial vaginosis. In 73 per cent of such cases both partners turned out to have the disease. All the examined women declared practicing oral or finger sex.
What is bacterial vaginosis fright with?
Bacterial vaginosis is a risk factor and sometimes even one of reasons for severe pathologies or some problems related to pregnancy and childbirth (miscarrying of pregnancy, intrauterine infection of the child, etc), as well it might cause some gynaecological pathologies, such as chronic inflammatory diseases of uterine appendages, infertility and other diseases and disorders.
What are the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis?
1.Strange odor. Normal female discharges do not have an odor. Never try to get rid of the odor by using flavored soap or intimate deodorants - it is much better to consult a doctor instead.
2. Changes in the amount and color of discharges. Normally there should not be too much discharges and they must be either colorless or whitish. As soon as you realized there is something wrong with your vaginal discharges, go to a doctor.
3. Itch and irritation in the vagina. Again, remember that only a doctor can help you.
May be you do not have bacterial vaginosis. Well, can you do something to prevent it? Yes, you can. Simply keep in mind that the following things might cause disbalance of bacteria in the vagina.
Sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis and gonorrhea - do not think that a woman cannot get these diseases from another woman!), these can be bacterial, fungous and virus infections(herpes, hepatitis, AIDS)
Over consumption of drugs which destroy beneficial microflora of the vagina. These as well can be local contraceptives containing 9-nonoxinol (foams, sperm-killing lubricants and others)
Frequent change of sex partners
Non-observance of intimate hygiene rules, sharing of hygiene articles and sex toys.
Sometimes tampons cause disorders in vaginal microflora
Wearing of tight synthetic lingerie.
Necessarily take into account everything said above. Stay healthy!
