Later Phyllis was the head of Human Rights Commission of San Francisco and its Lesbian and Gay Advisory Committee. The list of her achievements is long. Phyllis got a Doctor of Education in Human Sexuality and professed from 1976 till 1987. The way to the happiness was long and difficult. Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin dedicated their whole life to the fight for lesbian rights and responsibilities. Their life and love inspired the famous lesbian film-maker Joan E. Biren to make a film, which was presented at gay and lesbian film festival.
4. Martina Navratilova
Martina Navratilova, the famous American tennis player was born in Prague in 1956. She moved to USA in 1973 and later became one of the most popular American women. She won so many titles, that no one of modern male or female player could come up with her in it.
Martina confessed her bisexuality in an interview in 1980. She confessed having relationship with lesbian author Rita Mae Brown. Since that time shes had the problems with sponsorship. It was the price of openness.

7. Ma Rainey

Ma Rainey (1886-1939) born Gertrude Pridgett is known as a famous Blues singer. She was even considered to be the Mother of Blues. She was not the first woman to perform the Blues, but her popularity made everybody forget the others. Paramount Records signed the contract with her in 1923, so she was one of the first recorded Blues singers. In spite of being married to Will Pa Rainey, she didnt make secret of giving preference to both men and women. Her love to women was often reflected in her songs. 1886-1947
Gertrude Stein was a famous writer and a very famous lesbian. She gained her popularity thanks her art hangout but not only to her works. Her apartment was constantly full of celebrities and artists. She was a kind of art lawmaker. Her knowledge of literature, art and psychology helped her to become popular among such genius people as Ernest Hemmingway and Pablo Picasso. She met her future partner Alice B. Toklas in San Francisco in 1907. They began living together in a year, and didnt break up until Gertrudes death.
Their relationship shocked the society of their time. They never declared what kind of relationship they were in. Nobody could say for sure whether they slept together or were lesbians, but the literature society knew this. Wearing short hair, Gertrude ruined the society ideas of feminity. Most of their time Gertrude and Alice spent in France. When World War I began they had to move down to the countryside. It was rather hard time for these two women. They lived in a small town and had to walk for long distances to get something to eat. In spite of all these difficulties, they managed to save their love. Gertrude died of stomach cancer practically right after the war. Alice and Gertrude had been together for 30 years and became an example of true love and devotion.
