Telling Fortunes By Hand or Anatomy of Lesbian Sexuality

While trying to reveal genetic pre-conditions for homosexuality and carrying out some studies, American and British researchers Marc Breedlove, Raymond Blanchard, Richard Lippa and John Manning paid their attention to the differences between anatomy of hands in persons of different sexual orientation.

Neurohormonal human sexual orientation development theories suppose that high prenatal androgen levels in critical period of development can be related to heterosexuality in men and homosexuality in women. At the same time low androgen level might cause homosexuality in men and provide heterosexuality in women. Marc Breedlove says that the length of fingers depends on prenatal androgen level.

Due to some practical and methodological reasons, the researchers didn't have possibility to measure prenatal androgen level in humans and then to find connection between prenatal androgen level and sexual orientation in adults. However, the scientists came to the conclusion that there are some signs of prenatal androgen level, one of them being correlation between the length of the index finger and the ring finger.

Anthropologists have found that the ring finger as a rule is longer than the index finger in men, while in women the index finger is usually longer than the ring finger.

The study of human sexuality was carried out at a gay festival in California. Here the researchers managed to persuade about 720 people to let him take a photo of their hands and to fill up a form in exchange for a lottery ticket. The participants had to answer questions about their sexual orientation, sex, age and the number and sex of their elder brother or sisters.

Marc Breedlove came to the conclusion that most lesbians had correlation between the length of the index finger and the ring finger like in men. Lesbians, unlike heterosexual women have index finger longer than the ring finger.

Also the blanks that were filled up by the participants of the study allowed to reveal one more correlation: the more elder brothers a man has, the higher chance that he is a gay. According to Blanchard about 15 percent of gays have elder brother.

The same correlation has not been observed in women. A woman's sexual orientation does not depend on the number of elder brothers or sisters.

Everything said above does not mean that you can define a person's sexual orientation by his or her hand. So do not suspect your girlfriend of being non-lesbian if her ring finger is longer than the index finger. Do not make any conclusions only after looking at somebody's hand. Scientists still discuss this matter and have not proven yet that correlation between length of fingers can be a reliable sign of this or that sexual orientation.
